bottom bracket/crankset problem
 

Hello there, new to the forum so hi :thumb:

I'm building a bike, first time iv done it. Converting a very old raleigh espirit, and I'm stuck with taking off out the bottom bracket. Got the chain ring off and that crank arm.

The other crank arm and bottom bracket is where I'm stuck. I've unscrewed that ring next to the crank arm and then I expected it just to slot out. It looks like its sealed on the chainring side on the bottom bracket. I need to know if this is threaded, and how do I get it out? And if it doesn't come out, is replacing the bottom bracket possible?

the actual bottom bracket (BB) comes out in three main parts, the two cups and the spindle. you need to remove both arms from the spindle then remove the adjusting cup on the left side of the frame, and the spindle will come out.

Pictures would help. Seems like the "ring next to the crank arm" would be the lock ring that holds the adjustable cup in place. The cup is threaded into the BB shell. There should be some small holes in the face of the cup that are designed to receive a pin spanner tool. It shouldn't be too tight so you might be able to make de with needle nose pliers. http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-...racket-service

Thanks. I can't see any holes, but there is a raised bit that looks like something would fit around. Il try get a pic up now if my phone will let me.

OH yeah that is a Raleigh BB you need a certain type of wrench for that, or a real good thin adjustable wrench

Lol yeah was reading about them on sheldon brown. might take it down to the local shop, i dont want to round it off really.

If you can't find the HCW-11 or just want to do this on the cheap, as an alternate you can fit a standard 16mm open end wrench on the flats of the bottom bracket. The wrench will only engage one side of the wrench flats but as long as it is not seized in place you should be able to turn it without problems.
