Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

Hub replacement for SRAM T3

I'm evaluating if an SRAM T3 can be repaired or replaced. While getting another T3 is certainly doable, I'd like to see if there are any other hubs I can use in its place.

The bike is a Dahon Curve D3. The twist shifter is a little worn, but it works. The T3 I have has no coaster or drum brake.

Getting more gears isn't particularly important to me, and I like the simplicity of the 3-speed drivetrain.

Are there any other hubs, perhaps an SA or a Nexus, that I could use without modifying the frame or the rear wheel? What specs do I need to compare, just the number of spoke holes and the width of the hub?

personally I would go with SA. they have been building 3spds for decades. how old is your bike? I would likely just look for a new wheel. unless you can build it yourself labor will be about $80 or so plus the cost of spokes.

if you don't get some help here soon there is a good Yahoo group for UGH nerds

AW3 sturmey archer , all spare parts are available in the US,
Brompton has a 28 hole hub with a narrow axle , and rebuilding the wheel around one should work fine.

newer NIG design is an improvement , i hear.

The wheel itself seems in good shape, although I certainly understand that it would make my life easier to replace the wheel. A new hub seems to go for about $140 or so at the moment.

Are any of the SA 5-speed hub gonna work? Some of those gear ratios look pretty sweet.

What's NIG?

Original UK Sturmeys, when you let them get out of adjustment, the cable,
there was a non gear between 1:1 and high. 1.33.
so they are saying 'No In-between Gear'

I expect if there is a matching drilling you could re use your rim. get suitable spokes made?

5 speeds are probably only in 36 hole.. what's yours now?

The rear wheel has 28 spokes, corresponding to 14 holes on each side of the hub.

I ended up buying a 16" wheel with an SA hub. It's smooth, and I think a little better for climbing than the SRAM.

I was never happy with the T3 on my Curve. Didn't feel as solid or reliable under hard commuting use as I'd want.

It's a bit early to say, but I think the SA hub feels much more solid than the T3. Time will tell, and of course and I also have to see how easy it is to adjust after my next flat or tire change.
