Delta Strapless Toe Clips
Real quick question, I just picked up a pair of Delta Strapless Toe Clips off Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Bicycle-.../dp/B000FSQQMS
They came with the 4 screws, 4 washers, and two metal mounting pieces. I am wondering if these mountain pieces are necessary or not. Should they be used to avoid stress on the clips, or are they there for allowing bikes with different screw sizes to use the clips?
I guess this question goes more out to those who are familiar with the product.
(they came w/ no instructions)

Well I think that the mounting plates were used on the front so the screws wouldn't pull through, but a larger washer will do as well.

If the clips are plastic, you have to use the steel plates in front to spread the load. Otherwise the screws will rip through. You could use big washers as nwbikeman suggests, but the full width plate does a better job, and you already have it, so why wouldn't you use it?

I've had no problems with plastic clips using screws with washers. Without those mounting plates.

They came with washers already, so I don't think I'm going to need to use the mounting piece. I think once I get my back tomorrow, I'll be able to see in person what these are really used for. I just wanted to see if anyone on here already had these, and if they used the mounting plates...

Those plates aren`t particular to that model
As FN pointed out - they`re commonly used with plastic toeclips and that model is plastic. The idea is to distribute stress as evenly as possible over the front of the plastic .
Suggest you skip the idea of using the washers instead. You should be using those on the backside under the nuts. Yeah, I know - you didn`t mention nuts. They`ll be part of the package and without them I have no idea how you planned on attaching these.

Agree completely
He might not need nuts if his pedals have typical 5x.8 tapped holes. And while oversized washers will work, he already has the job specific plate. I have very limited vision sometimes, but I can't see why someone would go out of they way avoid using a paid for part that comes with the kit.
I`ve mounted several different models of these and although different brands, they were all designed to use the holes normally used to mount pedal reflectors. So even if there might be the off chance that some rider can mount them some other way - the supplier is nice enough to supply all the required hardware needed to mount them as intended.
But on a more personal note - I`ve never been too partial to strapless toeclips. They certainly don`t let you pull on an upstroke, and if keeping a shoe in place is an issue, BMX pedals with raised screws do a much better job of that.
I guess there`s lots of room for personal preferences - makes life interesting.

My wife/stoker uses plastic mini-clips on our tandem and plastic toe clips on her bike. Those mounting plates would be overkill for most uses, as long as the pedal cage has holes in the right place.
If memory serves me right, steel toe clips also often came with those plates. Can't remember if I used the plates on the several pairs of KKT Top Run pedals that I used, but note that pedals of that era didn't always have ideal holes for screws and the plates would have been useful
