Bottom bracket too short ?
 

Hi,

Recently my lockring on my bottom bracket got unscrewed by itself and I can't put it back on because the bottom bracket is too short ! ( See picture below ). I don't know the brand of the bottom bracket but it's old and rusty, (I'll chaqngeit soon) and the lockring is quite new. I ride a fixed gear if it helps.

Ok thank I'll take a look. But my bearings were put a few months ago and works well.

How much is on the other side ? It might be a matter of centering it up ? Anyway, if you're going to replace it, just get a sealed bb system threaded in there ?

who put the bearings in? I agree it looks like your fixed cup may be loose too. take the bike to whoever did the work.

I agree too that perhaps a cartridge style BB my prevent further problems

I never used recent bb, do I have to get the bearings or they come with it ? Thanks again !

I'd take it to the LBS if you are uncertain about fit and proper installation, they have the special tool that torques it into the bb tube properly. It's a sealed system, and the ball bearings are inside it already.

I agree!! if you are unsure what you are doing have a shop do it. you could also ask if a BFer close by would be interested in helping you out.

The others are right, the right cup backed off and you took up the slack on the left. It's easy to fix and you can do it yourself if you have a crank remover and the correct wrench for the right. It looks like a 3-notch cup so you might do the job with the crank on turning the cup with a hammer and punch. This seems like a crude technique but was standard practice when this BB was made.

The key is to remember that the right cup is always set tight to the frame, and the bearing adjustment is done from the left. DSo before you start back out the left cup so the spindle is sloppy before you bring the right in. If turning the right eliminates play, back off the left more and continue so you're tightening the right without tightening the bearings. When the right side is home, you can finish the job using the adjustable cup and lockring.
