Replacing front derailleur

Woot another new thread

Sorry about that but I have a question. I have an Acera-X Rear derailleur and and acera-x front derailleur with shimano alivio shifters.

If I buy a Deore LX Front derailleur, will it work?

This is a 2004 Kona Fire Mountain 24 speed.

Thanks!

It'll work just fine. Make sure that you get the clamp size and the cable pull direction right.

Depending on the way your cable is routed to the front derailer, you need either a top pull or a bttom pull unit. If the cable comes down the seat tube and is clamped to the derailer, you need a top pull; if it goes under the bottom bracket and then up, you need a bottom pull. Some models are convertible. You also need to determine the diameter of the seat post and get one which has the correct clamp for your frame.

Nope. Front derailleurs aren't even close to being standardized. The two factors that I suspect will be an issue on your bike are cable pull, which is obvious; and clamp size, which you should really measure. If you don't have access to a caliper, clamp a big adjustible wrench lightly around your seat tube and measure the distance between the jaws.

1 1/8" = 28.6mm
1 1/4" = 31.8mm
1 3/8" = 35.0mm

An LX derailiuer will still shift like crap with low level shifters - better to upgrade them first

Actually, I'm more inclined to think the opposite. Low level shifters have a little bit of "slop" built into them that gives you a little overshift before settling into gear. I don't think that will affect an LX derailleur excessively although it won't shift as crsiply as it would with matching components. If you try to mate an XT or XTR shifter with a low end derailleur, however, they don't have that "overshift" characteristic built into the shifters and it really will shift like crap.

There is a similar type to the 'round the bottom of the BB' type. My derailleur pulls from the bottom; the cable goes down from the seat collar area, around a brass pulley that screws to the back of the seat tube and up to the derailleur clamp. Same derailleur type though .
