Cane Creek S-3 headset replacement

I need to get a new had set for my new Salsa Fargo. The bike that I am replacing has a Cane Creek S-3 headset (1 1/8"), which i like. Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement that is similar?

If you liked the S-3 well enough, then why not replace with the same?

The Fargo hasn't been around long. How did your headset die?

Bikes: '''96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '12 Surly Pacer, All are 3x8,9 or 10. It is hilly around here!

If I interpret the OP correctly, his S-3 didn't die, I think it's installed on another bike and the new Salsa is currently without any headset.

I agree that the S-3 would be a good choice for your new bike too. The closest similar headsets I know of are FSA's Orbit series. I have an Orbit XLII on one bike, an Orbit X on another and an S-3 on a third bike. All of them have been completely satisfactory.

Of course, if money is no object, there is always Chris King.

I have s8 which is same basic design as S3 but with stainless bearings. I suppose that makes it less prone to rust than S3, but if you are not riding in wet condtions a regular basis, S3 seems like a great choice. Only reason I wound up with S8 is because I got one at same cost as S3 so I figured what the hell, I'd get the stainless bearings.

The S3 is an amazing headset, unless you're putting a Chris King headset on replace with the same.

I am selling my 2010 Fargo and getting an 2011 XL. I was thinking of keeping the S-3 Headset on the XXL when I sell it. Just looking for options for the the XL. I have heard that the S-3 headset has been discontinued.

They seem to have eliminated S-series for 2011 but you can still find them online. Near as I can tell the 10 and 40 series in the new line up would be comparable.

Edited to add: I found this on http://blog.treefortbikes.com/index.php/posts/651 from December:

40 Series

S –series and XX headsets are completely removed and they are replacing them with the 40 Series. All upper and lower sections are sold separately in order to allow for them to accommodate the 30 different tapers that are currently in production with frame makers. They are able to handle 95% of these combinations with 4 tops, 2 bottoms and a couple of conversion crown races. They combined all of the good features from the two previous series and trickled down technology from the 110 family. One nice feature for the home mechanic is in the captured compression ring they use which gets rid of some of the headache during install. Overall this group is much improved and they kept the price the same, which is always nice!

Thanks for the info. Funny thing is that I read that blog from treefort. It is LBS that go to a lot. Of course all of the combinations may make it difficult. Will look into it.

Since this is the first year of the new line up and you like the S-3, there should be plenty around online. Probably at good prices too. So getting one should not be a problem. For 40 series, yes there appear to be variations in the combination of cups you can use but thats only an issue for bikes with tapered HTs; you can also buy the standard complete 1 1/8 headset so you wouldn't need worry about combinations. S3 or 40 series would appear to be viable options for your Fargo.
