clicking front wheel

I managed to get my IGH adjusted on my 2nd hand Dahon today. As I was riding it, I heard a clicking and assumed it was the rear hub. I got back and it's quiet as a mouse. The clicking is from the spinning of the front hub. Where do I begin on that one?

If it happens only at low speed, and stops at higher speeds, it could be a bit of debris bouncing around in a hollow rim. The other likely possibility is dirty hub bearings. They sound different, but you had the mic. muted when you posted, so I can't help you there.

chandltp, Also open the front brake's release lever as it the pad may be catching a seam.

Hmm.. didn't think about the brake, but it's currently pretty wide open. It speeds up with speed, but it's consistently about once per rotation. I'll have to check out the brake catch a seam idea. If it's the bearings.. I probably don't have the right tools handy for that. :/

How many miles on the wheel? If it's a pinned instead of a welded rim, the pinned rim joint can come a bit loose and make noise. If the click happens right when the rim joint is at the bottom, it's probably a loose joint.

It could also be a loose spoke, or a bad bearing.

With all due respect, where did you come up with this? The compression within a rim is staggering, and there's no way it could move, even on a slack joint. Back when rims were all pinned - either with 2 pins (like Lionel train tracks) or a single shaped pin thet fit the hollow - it wasn't rare to see rims with a gap of 1/8" or more at the joint. No problem, they all closed nicely when tensioned up.

Do you have a cyclometer on the bike? Are the pickup and magnet front wheel mounted. If the pickup is close it may be tapping the magnet each time around. Also, some pickup reed switches make a clicking sound each time the magnet passes even if they don't touch. Usually this noise is very low but it can be noticable.

No cyclometer on the bike. I'm planning on taking of the reflector to take that out of the equation. I checked out the wheel and it looks like it's in good shape.. so am I probably looking at bearings? Should I head on over to bicycle tutor for that one?
