Need help with bottom bracket cups...
 

I am restoring my Peugeot P8 E and currently I am replacing the bottom bracket with the loose-ball French bottom bracket cup set from Harris Cyclery. The problem I am having is that I cannot get the fixed cup removed. I have tried the bolt and washer trick that Sheldon Brown talks about on his website and I have tried a wrench, but even after using penetrating oil it will not budge. I was hoping maybe somewhere on here knows a better way to remove it. Thanks.

Are you sure you are turning it the right way? Some Peugeots were French threaded, some were Swiss threaded.

I needed to put a "helper" pipe over the end of my socket wrench to get more leverage when I was removing a fixed cup from a 70s UO-8 using the washer trick.

I am pretty sure. I was going by Sheldon Brown's website that says French and Italian bikes are right-threaded. Also the French bottom bracket cups I ordered are both right-threaded (even though I know that may not matter). I did not know that some were Swiss threaded though. Is there a way I can tell or is it just trial and error. I thought about using a pipe, but I was scared of possibly cracking the frame.

Someone in the Classic and Vintage forum should be able to tell you if it is French or Swiss.

I actually broke one ratchet handle with the pipe before finally liberating the BB cup with another ratchet. I was using a 24 inch steel pipe. Thankfully both ratchets were cheap. The frame was fine. Once you break the initial seal of rust that is holding the cup in, it actually spins freely and easily.

Okay thanks. I might use a pick and try to follow the threads inside of the cup and see which way they are going up. Then I will try the handle of my jack.
