retro rebuild - quill stem and new bars

I'm upgrading my 1976 steel Tanguy. I want to use wing type bars (drop bars with flat palm rests near the steerer tube) but they will not go through my Cenelli stem. Does anybody have any suggestion on a stem that will accomodate a wing bar? I want light, aesthetic, strong, safe.

THank you,

1" to 1 1/8" Threadless stem adapter AND A 1 1/8" threadless stem to match the bar diameter and length needed.

It's not a threadless stem - the stem is threaded and the head set is Campy Record. There is not enough stem sticking out hte top to take a threadless stem.

I get it now. thanks.

Assuming you are talking about a 31.8 clamp diameter the stem you are looking for is not going to look pretty but they exist

It will be a mixed time line build , need an Open face stem .. if a 26.0 bar,
you might score one of the Modolo (etc.) stems that open ,
they had a hinge in front, and the opening was the bottom of the bar clamp.

I've got the same set-up on and old Litespeed with a 1" threaded headset. I used Nashbar's quill to threadless adapter, their house-brand threadless stem with a 31.8 bar clamp and a 4-bolt faceplate and FSA's 31.8 center "Wing" bars. It's not the lightest arrangement available but it works well.

I've got a 3TTT Evol stem like that. I think it's a great stem, it allows you to install handlebars with the hinged faceplate, and on top of that it's a very racy, elegant stem IMO. They are indeed designed for 26.0 bars, though.

Something like HillRider's solution is where I'm headed. Any good ideas for determining the stem length and angle I may need? There's too many choices out there. I will not use adjustable stem, they just aren't pretty to look at.

That's really tough to generalize. It usually takes people a little while in the saddle to find the sweet spot. That sweet spot also changes over time as you hone in on your riding style.

Here's a pretty nice looking adapter. http://store.velo-orange.com/index.p...m-adaptor.html

I haven't seen a Tanguy since 1976. Would you mind posting a couple of photos when the project is completed?

Make it fit like your other bike., measure the distances.
