Front Derailleurs

Can anyone walk me through the steps setting up a front derailleur?

How high above the sprocket. angle low gear first or high gear setting the stops.

I mean soup to nuts, in baby steps please.

I bought a new hybrid last week and the box arrived today. I was able to true the wheels, set up the brakes, etc, etc but the front derailleur kicked my azz.

Thanks in advance.

- Outer derailleur rail should be approximately 1 - 2 mm above the largest chain ring.

- Outer rail of the derailleur should be parallel to the chain rings when looking down from the top.

- Move the chain to the largest cog on the rear.

- Move the front derailleur to the smallest chain ring.

- adjust the low limit screw so that the derailleur is about 1 mm away from the chain (on the smallest chain ring).

- Pull the front shifter cable taut and tighten on the derailleur.

- Move the derailleur to the largest chain ring and adjust the outer (high) limit screw so that the chain does not throw the chain past the large chain ring.

All going well, your front derailleur should be shifting solid. If need be, use the barrel adjuster on the shifter to make minor adjustments (1/4 turn at a time).

hope this helps.

There are some nice youtube videos. I don't have a link now, nor did I ever try to adjust it using these videos. But some do seem very good and easy to follow. I would watch them all and pick the one that makes the most sense. They each have a slightly different approach. Another way is to go to the manufacturer of the derailleurs web site and download the instructions. I know shimano's website has links to the instructions.

Great help guys. It's late, tomorrow is the shake down commute, I'll be able to do it right after work.

Thanks again.

Just an update and another rounds of thanks.
I rode it to work this morning, it worked pretty well, that derailleur noise had to go.
When I got home I did as instructed, took a bit of time but I got it, it shifts well and is quiet as a church mouse.

So once again thanks for everyone's help/suggestion.
