Bottom bracket issues?
I have a weird 'clicking' noise coming from my bottom bracket. Not sure what it could be, maybe just tighten everything up? Needs some grease? Not sure.
Thanks in advance. Any help will be appreciated. Made a video, uploaded it to youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXcqALklio4 |
Can't hear any clicking on the video, only wind noise, if it's clicking, and everything is tightened up, replacement seems like the next option.
Are you sure it's not somthing like the seat pin, or saddle rails, as lots of thing can cause creaks, check the sticky on the main page. |
First of all make sure it's in the BB and not crank/spindle movement, the chain passing over a shift gate, the pedals, or any on the dozens of places that cause clicking synchronously with pedaling.
If you've eliminated the simple stuff and it's down to the BB try to decide whether it's within the bearings, or might be movement of the entire cartridge in the frame (or the cups with external BBs). If the movement is between the BB and frame because of sloppy threads the cure is to tighten the fit. Some have had success with teflon tape, but I find that it tears and doesn't thread in well. I wind dental floss around the cup 7-8 times following the root of the thread, with one end overhanging to help get it started. It will take more torque to turn it in, but if it seems too tight, try again with a thinner floss, or "paint" the cup with latex paint or spoke prep for the same purpose. |
Check & tighten the pedals. Does it happen on one downstroke, or both? Tighten the crank bolts. Tighten the rear wheel skewer. Remove and reseat the bottom bracket - I find plumber's (teflon) tape to be a good solution (as FBinNY posted).
My g/f's DB sorrento had a "semi-cartridge" bottom bracket. One side was a cartridge, the other was loose bearings. There was also a distinct clicking when pedaling hard - almost like a ping, felt like your shoelace was hitting the frame or something. Anyway, tightening up the loose bearing side with a spanner made everything go away. If it's a cartridge I'd say you're SOL and have to replace it though, if reseating doesn't fix it and there is play in the BB axle. |
