What am I missing here? (an axle and...?)
1 Attachment(s)
I got my hands on a free (fixed gear) wheel, mostly so that I could dick around with wheelbuilding (practicing taking it apart and putting it back together). I figured that, as long as I have it, I might as well throw it on a project bike that I have sitting around and have a useable single speed fixed gear bike in the meantime (I'm eventually going to build a different, much nicer rear wheel for the bike).
The problem is, the hub is missing the axle, and I'm sure a few other bits and pieces that I'll need in order to install it (see picture). What exactly do I need here? Just an axle and some bolts? Hubs are one component that I have virtually no experience with (and I'm eager to learn) As I mentioned, it's a fixed gear hub (a Surly--no model number, but it looks like a really dirty version of this: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/f...ubs.html#surly). So what do I need, and where would you recommend I get it? Thanks in advance! |
Axle, bearings, cones, lock nuts, spacers, nuts. You may be able to buy a complete set at your local bike shop from a wrecked wheel.

Ok. Sounds like there are enough bits and pieces that a LBS is definitely the way to go as opposed trying to get everything that fits together from somewhere like loosescrews.com. Thanks!

Thanks. I'll just bring it in to the LBS or bike co-op to have them check it out. Worst case scenario, I can still practice wheelbuilding on it.
