Easy to replace older bottom bracket with a new sealed unit?
 

Can you easily replace an older non-sealed bottom bracket assembly with a sealed cartridge? The inside threads on one side of the spindle are stripped out. Bike currenly has a Cambio Rino spindle on a 20-something-year-old Italian road bike. Thanks in advance.

To answer the question, yes, but there are some considerations. The bottom bracket shell may use one of several different threadings, and the replacement cartridge assembly has to have a spindle of the correct length. What make and model is the frame?

Take out the Whole BB assembly
Or more likely lacking the whole BB wrench set ,
have a Bike shop do it.
then they can see/measure the relative lengths
and select the appropriate replacement part.

If the threads on the BB shell are stripped, you have very few options. Velo Orange sells a threadless bottom bracket.

You say the threads are stripped, but have you asked a bike shop if they can re-tap these? this may resolve your issue.

The way I read it is the internal threads on the spindle are toast.

Easiest: The Capt. Piccard approach, Take to bike shop,
say "I want the BB replaced,.. 'Make it So' .. " :rolleyes:

a couple of options:
1.) replace the spindle
-actually quite easy if you can find a replacement italian bb spindle (ie: you have access to a recycled bike shop or gnarly old weirdo who owns a bike shop.) because then you can just keep your cups. Italian bb's have a different bottom bracket shell length than 'regular' ones, just make sure.

2.) replace with sealed bb.
-also pretty easy... italian bike? you're looking at a sealed italian bb (make sure it's italian. they run w/ a 36x24 treading which is different from 'regular ones'. also they are drive side regular threaded....). sealed squared tapered italian bb is still being made and sold. velo-orange sells one, for instance.

3.) threadless bb.
-not sure why you'd want to do this unless the threading on the bb shell is also stripped... In which case relyt is correct that velo-orange also sells a threadless bb. (other companies do it too but I think vo is the cheapest...)

It is the internal threads on the non-drive side.

So the fixing bolt that holds the crank arm on is removed? ,

if it wont unscrew and is not going to come off
and the crank as a result wont come off

then the spindle has to be cut off with a disc grinder.
It is hardened steel after all..

Got the cross threaded bolt off, but the thread inside the spindle is gone.

I am with those that suggest replacing the spindle with an exact copy before replacing the BB.
