Newb with headset questions..

Hi All,

I'm new to BF and somewhat new to biking - as in mountain biked in high school which was quite some time ago. In any event, I have a new interest in road cycling and have recently purchased Marinoni.

I assembled the bike and now I'm trying out different heights for the stem position. I've found a position that I like now, but I could go lower and I want to try that position before I take it in to get the steerer tube cut (I know I can cut it myself, but if my cutting skills is anything like cutting skills with my hockey sticks, it's better to let an LBS cut it for me).

Right now, there is a spacer from the head tube and the stem. I'd like to try and get the stem to that area and ride for a week to see if I like it but the base of the spacer is wider to match the head tube width so I'm not sure if I can even attempt that.

See attached pics for what I mean since a picture is worth a thousand words, and I'm not good at describing this.

Thanks in advance!

they make shorter stack cone spacers. you can also remove it but may loose some sealing properties of the cover/cone spacer. you can also flip the stem

Gotcha. So presumably something like this is what I'm looking for:

Would take that to a bike shop if I didn't have the correct fork cutting guide.

From looking at the manufactures website, their bikes look expensive, no point in wrecking an expensive fork for the sake of saving a few $.

Can the bike shop you got it from source shorter cone spacers?

I'm definitely taking it to an LBS to get the fork cut. I just want to make sure where I want the cut made. I didn't get the bike from a local bike shop - I had it shipped to me from Quebec (I'm in British Columbia).

First of all, I think that you are doing the right thing to test the bike fit before making changes, like cutting the steer tube, that can't be undone.

If it was my bike I'd flip the stem upside down. That'll give you about an inch of additional handlebar drop and it doesn't cost anything to do.

When the time comes to cut the steerer tube, you'll probably want to shorten the cable housings too.
