How do I adjust these handlebars?
I've been having a lot of pain in my hand/wrist and believe a handlebar adjustment can help me out.
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/405/dscn2891o.jpg/ there are three allen bolts, 2 on the side and 1 on the top. And there is one very large "nut". I assume the nut controls the height while the bolts control the angle? Thing is, I don't have a wrench anywhere near that big, will I need to buy one is there some other way of going about this? thanks! |
The "nut" is the lock nut for your headset and doesn't have anything to do with the stem's height or angle. Don't touch it.

The two bolts on the side control the angle of the stem, the one on the top controls the height. There are also one or two in the front that clamp the bar in place, if you need to rotate the handle bar itself. Like Hillrider said, don't touch that nut.

got it, thanks!

look closely at the 'quill' portion of the stem (the part that sticks into the fork) there is a an "minimun insert" or "maximun height" marking. besure this is out of sight below the nut

Got it. Unfortunately one of the bolts that adjust stem angle is stripped and I can't loosen it =(

Your sore wrists and hands are prolly just a result of having your brake levers too high. You should be able to grasp them just by moving your fingers, rather than having to rotate your whole hands back. I know the backs of my hands get sore when riding a flat bar bike with the levers too high.
So looking at the bike from the right, your levers should be around 4:30-5:00 on the bars, depending on your position on the bike. It's very common for levers to be mounted a bit too high, like this: http://www.thecyclepeople.com/admin/...ybrid-bike.jpg Move them lower, and not only will your hands stop hurting, but you'll be able to get onto the brakes quicker. |
Yeah I feel like my brakes are way too far away. I have to adjust my hands just to keep my fingers near them =(
I see what you mean regarding the adjustment, now I just need to figure out how to do that =p thanks! |
