Fork question: Will this fit?
 

Myself and several relatives have recently taken up cycling as a hobby and one of my cousins has my father convinced that he wants a carbon fork on his bike. Of course that means I was tasked with the job of finding a reasonably priced carbon fork for him.

My father has a 2004 Specialized Sirrus Sport

Being that his bike has disc brakes which he wants to keep, I found this fork on Nashbar:

Would that fit on his bike?
Are there better options I should be looking at?

My father is somewhat flexible on price, but I think he wants to keep it somewhere in that ballpark.

As far as I can tell it'll fit, but what is your dad hoping to gain by going to carbon? Cause he's not going to save much weight; the 1-1/8" one is 722g. It might be slightly comfier, though.

And what about the unused canti posts, won't they look silly? Oh wait, the bike already looks like that...

I guess there are better forks out there, but not likely at that price.

There is no real advantage to a carbon fork.

Like other said- that fork-at 722 claimed grams- isn't that light.I just put an Ebay chrome Moly steel fork on - it was 850 grams-$26- so 130 grams less- not that light-and a good aluminum fork would be lighter-so would a good(expensive) carbon fiber fork.
Nashbar stuff is usually ok- but not light or state of the art.

At his age, be glad he wants just carbon forks and not a porsche.
No benefit, but it will make him feel younger.

I agree I don't see what the benifit would be. a new cyclist could buy alot of other things with $120. new shorts, gloves, a helmet, shoes and pedals, a lighting system...

In the forum's tradition of not answering the real question, this thread is off to a rousing start. :) OK, a carbon fork, particularly this one, won't save any weight, improve the ride or improve the handling. We, and the OP, all realize that. However, his father doesn't and why burst his bubble?

To the OP: The fork you show should fit his bike and is the least costly carbon option I know about. Maybe the canti/V-brake studs unthread so they won't be as obvious. Go for it.

I've already tried explaining that the carbon fork won't do much for him, but if it makes him want to get out on his bike more often, I'm not stopping him.

It should work. If you're worried about the cantilever bosses looking silly (many mountain bikes look like this fwiw), you might be able to remove the posts.
