Bottom Bracket Problem on Trek 800 Mountain Bike
 

Have been trying to tune up my granddaughter's Trek 800 Mtn bike. Dates from the 90s so its not worth much but still in overall decent shape except....major wobble in the crankset. Removed the cranks and the adjustable cone but cannot get the spindle to come out. Tried to removed the fixed side cone but no matter how much liquid wrench and how much pressure I apply it seems in there for good. The bearings on the adjustable side were totally shot. Out of the retainer. Guess is that's the case on the fixed side also. There does not seem any good reason why I should not be able to slide the spindle out from the adjustable side; have done so many times on road bikes. LBS suggested it might be a jammed plastic sleeve protector but the spindle will move just so far and that is it. Does not feel like a plastic protector is blocking its exit. Can't move the fixed cone either way but just to be sure it does unscrew clockwise, right?

cone is on the axle, cup is the part screwed in the frame.

A) you know , fixed cup, it's left hand thread , right?

Thanks, I thought my terminology was incorrect. Did give it a dose of Liquid Wrench (actually several doses over a period of time). And did use the correct spline tool and handle with an additional piece of pipe for extra leverage. Was afraid I might bust something so did not try harder. Should it normally slide out the adjustable cup side? (The spindle). This is the first bottom bracket on a mountain bike that I have worked on. Usually deal with older road bikes.

once both crankarms are off, and the adjustable cup is removed, the spindle should come out.

only thing that may be keeping the plastic sleeve in

is the screw that holds the Plastic cable guide on the out side of the BB shell.

That did it! Thank you Thank you Thank you!! Wonder why the LBS never suggested that? I never even noticed it myself. But then I was not looking there. Loosened the screw a bit and the spindle just dropped out.
