Vinyl adhesive film/tape for frame protection

I've seen one ebay shop selling vinyl specifically for protecting bicycle frames but I figure the product is probably just a cut-down version of a specific type of industrial film/tape which could be bought at a lower price.
The same sort of thing is also sold for cars and motorbikes also at very high prices.

Does anyone know if there's a generic product that'd work for this application?

The 'permanent adhesive backing', does that mean it's really hard to get off or simply that the adhesion won't lessen over time? For a bike the main thing is for the film to both stay put but also peel off without leaving a sticky residue when it's time for replacing.
