Bike *Saddle* Swivelling; not seatpost!
 

Hello all,

I've recently started using a bicycle as my primary means of transportation, and I'm loving it so far. I've run into a problem, however; today I took a bump and my saddle started swivelling quite easily. For a moment I thought my quick release had given out, but that is not the case.

My seatpost is quite secure in the seat tube, but my seat is not secure in the seatpost. Please observe the following pictures:

Now, please observe the position of the light. Do note that I did not reposition the light.

The seat and the seatpost can disconnect, as I discovered today.

I'm at a total loss as to how to fix this. The bottom of the seat doesn't seem to expand, nor does the top of the seat tube contract. There are no bolts, nuts, or screws that I can adjust.

Is anyone familiar with this kind of seat? I'd like to avoid taking it to my local bike shop, if only so I can get some more hands-on experience with maintaining my bike.

Any help you can provide is welcome and appreciated :)

Buy a new seat post, that one's toast.....

Not a fix , just buy a new seatpost, the bond between the head and the shaft have separated..
you can find ones that are much nicer too

bring the old one to your local bike shop,
they can measure the diameter of the seat post you have, to get the right replacement.

Thanks for the help, both of you! I'm sorry to hear it's a replace, not a fix, but at least I found out before I had to commute tomorrow! I'll head out shortly, but before I go, any recommendations as to brand or price point?

I have this kind of problem with my MTB - good to have finally found a solution!

Just out of curiosity, did yours creak before this happened, or was it just a sudden loosening?

fix is requiring tools like a drill press and vise or v block to insure the drill is in the center
across the diameter of a round tube , epoxy, steel roll pins to press thru the holes you machined .

since you asked the question , instead of just going ahead and fixing it,
one assumes you don't have those tools ..

I re-glued a seatpost head that came unglued. A little sandpaper to prep both surfaces. Thorough clean with 99% alcohol. Adhere with JB Weld. Let cure for 48 hours. I've put over 1000 miles on it since.

You can fix as Lester said or replace for less than $20. Make sure you take the post in with you. Seat posts come in a lot of diameters and you need to match it exactly.

Buggington, it was sudden and unexpected. There were no symptoms that I had noticed, though I've only been riding this bike for about a month now, and I'm not sure what it's been through.

fietsbob, one assumes correctly.

I ended up going to my LBS and getting it replaced for $15. While I was there they also found me a pannier rack that actually fits my bike, so that was a bonus!

The size might be/probably is engraved on the post - 27.2, for instance
