Can I upgrade 2006 to 2011 Ultegra shifters?

Updated controls look pretty sweet functionally and I was wondering if I can do an upgrade. I have full 2006 Ultegra on a Trek 5200, but all I really want to change out are the shifters. Anyone know if this is possible? Thanks!

Just saying 2006 Ultegra doesn't help much, which model is is, 6500 or 6600?, if 6500, no, as it's 9 speed, if 6600 yes, it won't offically be compatible, but will work.
