Shimano Deore Hubs - Open & Close positions ??

I just picked up the Super Grizzly and it has thin Shimano Deore hubs. There is a black plastic circle around the axle at both ends of each that has "OPEN" and a little arrowhead pointing to the left indicating CCW printed on it and can be rotated about 12 to 15 degrees with circlip pliers.

What is this & what does it do ??

It's a grease-injection port. Doesn't work very well IRL. Make sure it's in the CLOSED position so dirt and water don't get in.
