Regarding Vintage 1" Threaded Headsets

Chalk it up to riding year round in an environment with salt on the roads half the year but my headset spacers and and adjusting nuts under the top cap have disintegrated. It is a lower end made in Taiwan Bianchi with what appears to a JIS 27.0 inside crown race. I am looking to replace it and want to know if I can use an ISO headset as long as stack height is similar. JIS being less of a standard and appearing only on cheap bikes I would prefer to source a gently used upgrade for cheap. Thanks for any info regarding this. I looked at the Sheldon Brown site and it appeared they are interchangeable but I want to make dead sure.

Nashbar used to have a selection of them. Now, I think you probably have to go to ebay. Make sure to ask questions and I would suggest buying new if possible. Good luck

You can easily have your JIS fork milled down to accept an ISO crown race. Nashbar used to have a very good cartridge bearing 1" threaded headset for a remarkably low price but i don't think they still sell it. If you can find a Shimano 600 (HP-6400) cartridge bearing headset at reasonable cost, buy it. They were really great headsets.

Thanks to both of you. I will probably have the fork milled down to accept an ISO crown race as all of the higher quality headsets I have seen are of that standard and it is actually a widely accepted standard.

eBay has tons of both sizes; no point in milling it down. You can get basic ones or expensive ones, but both types are readily available.

there's so many possible routes here, but i will say that a tange levin cds is a very nice headset. And under $30. And, it looks nice, available chromed or black. Paying a shop to mill the crown to accept a 26.4mm race seems excessive to me, unless you feel a need to install a King or something.

As for the interchangeability, the cups on a JIS threadset are/were .2mm more narrow than on an ISO headset. I've seen many newer headsets with the 27.0mm crown race and the 30.2mm cups, probably b/c all the new, cheap forks out of China are coming with JIS standard fork crowns, with either ISO or JIS-compat headtubes.
