short reach calipers?
 

trying to sort out a road bike im building up.

the bike orginally states that it came with "Shimano 600 Ultegra Dual Pivot brakes, Shimano 600 Ultegra levers". I am not sure if these are short reach or not. If got a wheelset that isnt the stock set that ive mounted on the bike and i have set of shimano 105 calipers ive tried throw on the bike just to see if they would fit. They appear to be standard reach calipers but the braking surface doesnt line up with the pads. the pads over reach the braking surface by about a pad width. Needless to say these wont fit.

IM wondering if i what i need are short reach calipers or somthing differnet altogether?

Reach = distance from center bolt,/mounting hole,
to where the pads can be mounted, so there is a 10mm adjustment range typically.

whats the distance to the rim where the brakes grab?
measure and restate the question with dimensions.

The definitions of long reach and short reach changed over time. Over the years wheel/fork clearances have compressed so what was short 20 years ago is now long.

It's best to avoid these vague terms and speak directly of the needed reach (the distance from brake hole to center of rim braking track) expressed in millimeters. The range of reach is a published spec. on brakes expressed as something like 39-49, and is usually also marked on the back of the caliper itself.

center hole to center of braking surface is 40mm

i now see that my spare set of 105s say 47 - 57mm on them.
