can't diagnose creaking noise

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/creaks.html#bottom

I used this guy's tips on finding creaking noise that occurs somewhat irregularly. Sometimes, I can hear it with each pedal. Other times, it's completely silent. The creaking sound aren't particularly loud, but they're there. The sound only occurs when I pedal hard. They don't occur when I coast. I don't think it has anything to do with the handlebars either because I can hear the noise when I'm just riding regularly sometimes.

I went to the bike store to have it checked out, but mechanic couldn't hear anything. Like I said, sometimes it's completely silent. any ideas?

About 100% of the many times this happened to me, the cause was a loosening bottom bracket.

I'm guessing I need to visit the bike store to do that.. I don't have the tools

bike: 1984 fuji del rey
accessories: none that would cause noise associated with pedaling

My creaking noise turned out to be the chainring bolts, which would only creak under heavy pedaling. On another occasion, sand scrunching between the cable ferrules and the frame guides.

Last time I noticed a creak during pedaling, I disassembled & re-greased my bottom bracket two or three times, creak didn't go away, then I regreased the pedals and the darn creak was still there.

I finally got around to checking the quick-release on the rear tire...

doh!

turns out it was either the saddle or the rear quick-release.

ahh! we're at peace...

Glad you've figured it out, I was going to suggest it could be your pedals
