Shimano 7 speed upgrade

I have a Trek 1220 road bike and was informed that the STI shifters are busted. That it would cost $150 to get replacemnt shifters if they can even find them. Questions: Can I upgrade to 8-9 speed if I change the derailleur, cog set, shifters, etc? (I am an endurance cyclist.) Or, what would you all recommend instead? Thanks.

WWW.aebike.com sells shimano sora 7 speed shifters, $90 (USD). Includes all cables, stops, etc....

This is a good time to think about longer term objectives.
If your plan is to replece this bike with something else in the relatively near future, replacing your broken shifters with a 7-speed Sora set or something like bar ends might make sense because that's the least costly plan.
If your future plans include a drive train upgrade, now's probably the time because the STI's are the most expensive part of the process. You'll have to address your bike's rear triangle spacing. It might be OK just as it is. You'll also have to replace or at least rework your rear wheel and get a 9-speed cassette and chain. If your bike has a triple crankset, a new front derailleur might be on the shopping list too.

rear triangle is respaced, making for a more fragile wheel. Consider the prospect of "endurance cycling"
20 or 30 miles from home, then trashing a rear wheel. Stick with 7-speed or buy another bike and use
this one (still 7-speed) for a rain ride.

Search the web for a local bike co-op. Most of them have rooms full of older parts.
The one in Cleveland has a dresser drawer full of 7-spd shifters.
