Derailer question, old friction freewheel
I have an old bike and I recently trashed the derailer.
I bought a Suntour Superbe of approximately the same age and it mounts just fine, however the bike won't shift into the higher gears. I chucked the derailer before getting the new one so I can;t compare geometry.
Did I screw up counting the chain links or could the derailer have too short a cage?
The bottom 3 gears work great.

It sounds like the high gear limit screw is set too tight on the new derailleur. Disconnect the cable and see if the bike will shift into the smallest cog while turning the crank by hand. Loosen the "H" limit screw 1/4 turn at a time until the chain will reach the smallest solidly but not tend to spill it to the outside. Then reconnect the cable.

Ditto HillRider on the H-set screw. Unscrew that out, and see if you can shift to bigger cogs.
If that doesn't solve your problem, check the derailleur hanger. Is it bent in?

You may also need to adjust the B (body) screw to keep the jockey wheels from riding on the cogs.
