To answer the OPs question. There are lots of specs involved, but start by sorting out the basics.

Threaded or unthreaded style
If threaded, what thread
Fork steerer diameter 1", 1-1/8" or other

I suggest you read a bit about the various headset types here to start on the process on figuring our what you need, or at least how to describe what you have now.

If you have a typical threadless headset in 1-1/8" life is easier because there are fewer permutations, and 99% are the same.
