Water in the old BB

Perhaps three weeks ago I was on the SGRT and went through that dark tunnel right by Pico Rivera. I've gotten used to the idea that it floods, and it's usually not that bad. This last time however it was deep. Perhaps a foot and a half. Well I'm certain that I got water in my BB and now there is a clicking noise at the top of my pedal stroke. Im somewhat familiar with taking a BB apart I've put together a few custom BMX bikes. My questin is what are the different type of BB for road bikes, if indeed there are any? What I know is that the spindle is a square taper. Here is a link to my bike's stats.
https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...ventnoir_x.htm.
Im guessing I will have to take the BB apart to get the spindle length. Once I get that is it as simple as getting a replacement kit and keeping my old spindle. Or should I replace that as well.Or even better is this servicable? Probably not. Any recommendations and tips would be greatly appreciated.

It's a cartridge bottom bracket, which means they're really designed to be replaced as a unit, not overhauled. The good news is that decent square taper bottom brackets are pretty cheap.

Looking at FSA's website, looks like the Vero crankset that came with your bike requires a JIS-standard bottom bracket (There are 2 different standards for square taper bottom brackets). It lists either a 116mm or 118mm spindle length. It's probably best to just pull the current one and buy an identical replacement. The spindle length should be printed on the outside of the bottom bracket, so you probably won't have to measure. The spindle is part of the bottom bracket assembly, so your new one will come with a spindle.

If you're up for doing it yourself, you'll need a bottom bracket tool, but again, fairly cheap.

I think your problem is unrelated to the submersion. Modern cartridge bearing bottom brackets are sealed better than that. Pull the chain off (you can just slip it off of the low gear and let it rest on the bottom bracket shell) and spin the crank. Don't go real fast and pay attention to how the bearing feel. If the bearings are shot, you should feel drag or resistance in the bottom bracket. It'll feel like it has little grains of gravel in there. If that's the case, replace the whole bottom bracket.

I would suspect, however, that a pedal could be the culprit. They are less well sealed and have smaller bearings that are more vulnerable. Check for play in pedal.

Im took off the chain and its %100 bottom bracket. I have my bike in front of me and I have the crank bolts off. I don't have a crank puller. Do I need one, or is there a less orthodox way of doing this. On my old bikes I would get a mallet and "loosen" the arms but I don't feel comfortable doing this to my new bike. Also I dont have a bottom bracket tool. If I get a new bottom bracket I will get the tool. Im looking at nashbar.com for a replacement and I don't see one that matches the kind I have now. I've removed old BB with a hammer and flat head screwdriver. So I may do that to my old one and get the tool for the new BB. Any advice.

You really need a crank puller and a bottom bracket tool. You'll also need a new bottom bracket in the correct spindle length and bottom bracket shell size. The tools aren't expensive but they aren't cheap either.

My feeling is that there is moisture in the BB shell. This will cause the clicking noise you hear. Remove the BB and dry the inside of the shell. I have done this many times in the shop. As was stated before the sealed BB's are very well sealed.

So I was ready start taking the crank and bb assembly apart and decided to go down to my LBS to see about the tools and maybe a hand. I go to show the tech were the problem is and of course the problem is gone. I can't wait to get on the road again. Hopefully it wont come back to soon, probably will though.

It's back. I went for a ride with my wife on the SGRT and all along; click, click, click. I will just bite the bullet and get a new BB and the tools that go along with it. Oh well, I guess you have to pay to play.
