Bottom Bracket Quality

I've been using Shimano UN54 bottom brackets and am not unhappy with them, but was wondering if there are significantly better bottom brackets that are a direct replacement.

What do you find to be the problem with the current BB?

The UN models arent bad for the price, the only thing i dont like is that some (i believe) uses plastic cups, besides that are quite reliable.

Token makes good ones but probably cost more than the shimano UN ones.

Tange make some nice square taper BB units with metal cups. Rumour has it that they manufacture the Shimano ones.
Phil Wood BBs are about 4 x as good for 10x the price.

Shimano used to make higher line square taper cartridge bottom brackets, the UN-7X, and UN-9X series, but since square taper cranks are a couple of generations out of date, they have reduced the product line to the single model.

The same thing happened to the newer Octalink bottom brackets. Shimano once offered 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace level road Octalink bbs but now only makes the 105 version.

Your UN54 bb is one of the most durable on the market, and is one of the very best bang-for-your-buck bicycle products our there.

In operating the Bicycle, the bearings get contaminated
by the elements it operates within,

water and minerals. ... dirt ..

keeping your bike clean
rewards you in component longevity..

The Velo Orange square taper BB's use a metal cup on both sides and are comparable, in my opinion, to the earlier higher level Shimano series of sealed BB's.
Plus, they come in a few sizes not available from Shimano.

The only "significantly better" square taper BB available is the SKF. It's expensive, but the bearings themselves are guaranteed for 10 years. Retail is $100+, so you can buy a lot of UN54s at that price.

The Velo-Orange BB's are OK, but the plating on the spindles is prone to peeling, IME.

OK, thanks. I'm not unhappy with the UN54s, just wondering if there was anything better at a decent price.
