Cassette Wiggles

Hi everyone. I'm having trouble with a wiggling cassette. I got a chainwhip and lockring tool, tried to tighten it, but it wouldn't budge. Either to tighten or loosen... Any suggestions?

If it's a cassette, you shouldn't have to use a whip to tighten it.

You might want to remove the cassette and see if there's some assembly screws on the back side that are loose.

Make sure the Centeron pulley has enough lateral motion, so it does not matter.

are you sure it's the cassette and not the hub bearings working loose? Had that happen on my commuter, thought it was the freewheel but it just needed a quick re-adjust of the rear hub cups

Whether it's a cassette or a freewheel, its' normal that the sprockets don't track entirely perfect as the wheel rotates. Normal, and 99% of the time not an issue.

If it is a cassette, a chain whip will do absolutely nothing to tighten the assembly.
With the rare exception of the early Shimano Uni-Glide, there's a splined lockring that holds the cassette to the freehub body.

Can't see the chain whip being much help on a freewheel either. Pedalling action tightens the bond, so an excessive wiggle has to be traced to either a substandard hub, shot bearings in freewheel, or freewheel threads on hub messed up beyond reason.

Went to the local LBS. I usually have more patience but my weekly group ride is tonight.

The problem was that I simply need a spacer. I bought the wheel a year ago, from a shop by my college. You think they would have caught this. Also, I must not have seen this problem the entire time i've owned a wheel?

Anyway, having a great shop to back you up is awesome. My new shop looked at the wheel for 10 seconds, put a spacer on, and sent me on my way no charge. I didn't buy the wheel from them, or my bike for that matter. But they take care of me none-the-less. Thanks for the help, I'm sure at some point I'll be back with more questions.
