Trek Soho 4.0 Alfine 8 Gearing
Hi everyone
I have a Trek Soho 4.0 which I love
However my chain is now in need of replacement - and I thought it an opportune time to alter the gearing. It is a stock setup with 44/18. I don't think I have never reached 8th gear - and almost never 7th.
I am therefore considering changing the sprocket. What would be recommended? I thought initially a 20t - but would that make much difference? I see the Nexus sprockets fit and are available up to 23t.
I'm also wondering if the chain will be long enough with a larger sprocket (EBB)?
Thanks!

To put your new 8th ratio just below where 7th ratio is now, try a 21T sprocket.
New chains come extra long and typically have to have links removed anyway.

A 20T cog will lower your gearing by 10% and a 21T by 15% so how much lower you need will determing your choice.
As tcs noted, new chains come longer than almost any bike requires and are sized down to match your specific requirements.

OK Went for a 20t - and it's much better
You were right about the chain - had to lose several links. The gearing suits me just fine now!
Thanks
