SRAM or Shimano crank on a Campy 9-speed BB?
Hi, I managed to strip the pedal thread on my drive side (or course) new 9-speed compact Mirage crankset. I'd be willing to just pay for my mistake and buy another crankset, but I'm having trouble finding one. Would a Shimano or SRAM compact crank work for me? Square taper BB I think...
Thanks in advance for any help

no, because shimano and sram no longer offer square taper cranksets, especially on their compact cranks, and their square taper standards are different to what campy uses anyways.
You'll need to use a shimano or sram external cup BB to use shimano or sram compact cranks. They're not even $20.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. How about chain size? Should I be looking for an older SRAM or Shimano crankset, and how would I specify? Do I have to specify SRAM or Shimano 9-speed? Sorry, been riding Campy only and am pretty ignorant about the others.

I would think a 9 speed chain would work with a 10 speed crank .... can't be much different ...

Cranks are pretty interchangeable. The important thing is that the chainring spacing is generally correct but this information is absurdly easy to find... But you're looking for compact square tapered cranks and that's more interesting. IRD and velo orange make them.

Thanks, folks. I think I will just get my BB changed to a Shimano or SRAM and get a matching compact crank. This seems to be the cheapest/easiest solution. I already have a SRAM chain from my change to the compact crank this spring, so it appears my destination has been revealed. However, Homebrew01, if you are willing to part with your Mirage crankset, I might be interested, thanks.

Canuck: You could just have the crank threads repaired with a threaded insert, trademark name Helicoil. It is a steel spring which is inserted into oversized threads drilled and tapped into the old stripped ones. Properly done it is stronger than the original threads. Way cheaper than a new BB and crankset or even just a crank arm.

I didn't have any usable overlapping gears between rings due to chain rub on my big ring with an FSA Carbon Pro Compact crankset which was "9 and 10 speed compatible" until I spaced one of the rings out using thin LeTour or Wheels Manufacturing spacers made for the purpose (perhaps .6mm).

Hi, that sounds like what I need, but I'm still waiting to see if an engineer/machinist friend of mine can help me with the aforementioned helicoil solution. At some point I may hear from him and then I will know if I need a new crankset or not. Sorry for dragging this out!

Homebrew01 please PM me with an email address if you are still interested in selling that crankset, I may need it, as my friend can't do the job very quickly. (I can't PM because I don't have 50 posts yet, or so the error notice said.)
Thanks, Ex Pres, I will check out my LBS, the guys there are pretty good.
