Threadless stem install on old road frame.
 

I just purchased a 70mm threadless stem + 11/8 steerer but was told that i need an adapter in order to install on my old frame.

can someone clarify what this adapter looks like.

Does your old bike have a threadless, or threaded headset?
What size steerer, 1" or 1-1/8""

Since you describe it as an older bike, I'll answer as if you have a 1" threaded headset. In that case the adapter fits into the fork and tightens with a wedge like your old quill stem. Then it has a roughly 2.5" 1-1/8" dia stub sticking out above the headset to which you can clamp the stem. Here's a link to various models. Note the bottom has to fit the fork/headset, and the top has to match the stem.

If you want to raise your handlebars you will probably end up with an odd space below your stem and above your headset.

I recommend putting threadless headset spacers in this space. You might need something like electrical tape to take up the extra room but it will be invisible when completed and will keep the spacers seated well.

The end result is a very slick looking transition from headset to stem. It will look just like a threadless set up :)
