Shimano Nexus 3 coaster hub problems
I am fairly competent in bicycle maintenance and repair but my brother's 2010 Gary Fisher Simple City 3 has me stumped. Infrequently, but enough to be concerning- immediately after downshifting into first gear the hub will feel sluggish and make a groaning noise until you backpedal to slightly engage the brake shoes. Then it pedals without a glitch. Riding off of a curb or over potholes seems to trigger it but it is fairly infrequent. He took the bicycle back to the shop under warranty but the problem wasn't fixed. The shift cable is well adjusted and the bicycle is meticulously maintained. Will this glitch shorten the hub's lifespan?
I was asked if I could quiet the raucous ticking (it was far more quiet when brand new) of the pawls which, of course get louder in the two higher gears. I have yet to open up a 3 speed hub and I imagine I would need the special Shimano igh hub grease if I wanted to lube the pawls- if that is what I would be lubricating. Could I just occasionally put a few drips of 90w or even thicker gear oil into the push rod hole and that would quiet it without damaging the grease inside? Thank you in advance.

I have one of these on my cruiser bike....and it had some problems in the beggining and was told... 1) do not take it apart 2) do not lube it....any problems send it back under the 2year warranty with shimano..those things are like clockwork inside and noone really wants or knows how to work on them......but I would tinker with the alignment of it first... making sure the yellow line is where it is supposed to be while in the middle gear ( I think its the middle)....otherwise send it back....

The ticking is normal with those....sounds to me like this needs to be sent back to Shimano though...there is a 2 year warranty with them...but at the very least...the tension spring inside could be faulty...otherwise...I would send it back...maybe they bike shop can do a swap with the wheels so you dont have to wait..buy a new wheel have them send it to shimano and get the refund.
