what pitch thread for rear d?
 

I was thinking about making my own dropouts for a bamboo bike project and wanted to know what was the thread pitch for a rear Dérailleur. I plan on getting the appropriate tap tool and tapping the threads.
Anybody have the info on that?

Will be easier for you if you buy a rd hanger made of aluminum and play building the drop outs around that.

I've used some donor frames for their drop outs, but I wanted some dropouts that have a purchase for the carbon fiber or hemp reinforcement. like these I found on the interwebs - I contacted the guy who made them and he wanted $50+ for them so I figured I could cut my own for much cheaperhttp://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=214861

Note this is an unusual thread pitch for a 10 mm bolt so you are unlikely to find a tap of this configuration at the local Sears or Home Depot.

Thanks for the information! I found one at my local good hardware store (not home depot or lowes). They even sold me the 9mm drill bit to pre-drill the metal.

What thickness should I cut the dropouts out of? I was going to use 6061 and it come in 3/8" or 5/16" flat bar stock on ebay

You are sure the tap you found is M10 x 1.0 mm, not the much more common M10 x 1.5 mm right?

Dropouts are typically 5 or 6 mm thick and sometimes a bit thinner on steel frames For quick release hubs you want them thick enough to be sure the axle stubs don't stickout beyond the outer face and prevent the qr from clamping the dropout itself. Since axle protrusion is generally 5.5 mm per side, that's a good minimum thickness.

However, your 3/8" plate is 9.5 mm and 5/16" is 8 mm so both are muchthicker then that. 1/4" plate is 6.4 mm and closer to commercial dropout thickness and should be sufficient even in aluminum.

Thanks I got the right one! M10 x 1.0 the first guy found it while the second guy said they don't sell that size. Then I showed him where it was. It was just as hard to get the proper 9mm bit

I think I will get the 5/16" stuff - much rather pay a slight weight penalty for strength and piece of mind of knowing it was over built.
