Are my road bike forks twisted ?
Are my road bike forks twisted ?
The space between the dropouts is exactly 100mm.
When I place the forks on a flat glass surface with the fork crown flat against the glass and the blades curved down onto the glass, the two dropouts do not sit evenly on the glass. One dropout sits 7.3 mm above the glass.
Does this mean the axle is 7.3mm out of allignment? Is 7.3mm significant? If I get the forks "fixed" will this weaken them and be dangerous ?
What do people think, its not something I have seen before ?

It certainly suggests one of your blades is bent (almost certainly backwards)... this will decrease the rake and increase trail, put the brakes on angle, and possibly make the front wheel off-centre and/or not vertical.
IMO 7.3mm is nothing to sneeze at; I wouldn't be happy with it. If it's a steel fork, it can be fixed easily enough. If it's ally, bin it. If it's carbon, it was made that way and would be a warranty job.

This is a common check for a twisted fork and it appears that yours is. But it's possible for a fork twisted as yours is to still be true, if other factors compensate for the error.
Just as the proof of the pudding is in eating, the proof of the fork is in the riding. If your bike tracks true, and doesn't favor either side when ridden no hands then it's OK.
Otherwise, have a competent mechanic check it out.
