replacment adjustment screws
I would love to replace the adjustment screws on my 'v-brakes' with an Allen headed screw, but no idea where to start that process. Does anyone actually make those? the heads just seem really cheap on the screws, and I would rather use an allen wrench to adjust them

Others will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's anything special abouit those screws, so just remove one and take it to a good hardware store, they should have an Allen "cap head" screw that matches it.

Typically these are 2.5 - 3mm allen screws with flat (normal) threaded head. I don't know the threading, and it looks more coarse than standard metric for a 3mm or 4mm screw. But I've never checked exact threading. The $10/set Shimano Acera has philips screw adjusters, but the $8/set Origin8 Vbrake has 2.5mm allen. Go figure. At that price. I just replace the arms. But if you know a hw supplier, that might be a better source.

For the simple task of adjusting spring tension, the pan head Phillips is more than adequate. Using a damaged or otherwise ill-fitting driver is more likely to be problematic.
I believe your socket cap replacement screw will be an M3 or M4 and require a driver as small as 2.5mm. Realize that this small socket cap may collect crud, complicating the issue. So, you'll need to find a supplier that carries metric socket cap fasteners. If you want them in stainless, that will be a further consideration. |
sathor: If you are going to go to the trouble of replacing the screws you may as well go the few pennies extra for stainless socket head cap screws. Like other threaded fasteners don't neglect a dab of grease on the threads to avoid galling and seizing down the road.

I havn't decided if I will replace or not yet, just wanted to know my options. My wife's bike (as well as one of mine I really don't ride anymore) use that kind of brake, but my 2 main bikes don't. It just seemed like there had to be a better way than what came on the bike.
