Campagnolo Record 1" Threaded Headset?
 

Looking at redoing my headset here in the near future and I would like someones advise on this headset...how is the build quality and also long term quality of the unit itself?

That's a top quality headset. But it's for older bikes before 1 1/8" threadless headsets took over. Make sure that's the right type for your bike. That type needs to be carefully installed with a headset press.

alternative treaded 1" headsets abound, but if there is a need to keep
a classic road bike All Campagnolo, then thats what you do..

To answer your question. No experience with that headset. I do have Campagnolo Record & Super Record 1" threaded headsets from a few years earlier, but you would not be interested in that information.

Campy Record is/was Pro level. Not only will it last and last, all parts are servicable. Last headset you will ever need!

Make sure the stack height, race diameter, and cup size is compatible

I don't have that specific Campagnolo headset, but I do have several older versions on various bikes and they''ve lasted me several decades already without problems.

Not really. Yes, that Campy headset is very high quality but any and all loose ball or retainer held ball headsets will eventually fail from "brinelling" (pockmarking of the crown race and lower cup). If kept clean, well lubricated and properly adjusted, it will last a long time but by no means forever.

I'm a big fan of cartridge bearing headsets since the cartridges are far more resistant to pockmarking by their very design and worn out bearings can be replaced without having to remove the cups or crown race. Chris King is the class act of cartidge bearing headsets and one of the few still making 1" threaded versions. Also, Shimano made two very good 1" threaded cartridge bearing headsets, the Ultegra HP-6500 and the Dura Ace HP-7400, and these were very durable and reasonably priced if you can find them NOS.

At the opposite end of the price spectrum is the Ritchey 1" threaded loose ball headset sold by Loose Screws for only $17 and the same headset from Nashbar for only $15. It's a decent headset and can be considered disposable after a few years of service:

for 30 years, no problemos. and a super Record in my RB1 also trouble free.

The big hint: get them adjusted properly and if they never get loose. out of adjustment
so there is some rattle , acceleration of ball into race, then thy will last an exceedingly long time .

But cheaper headsets will work fine.. If you are a collector and restorer
you have different additional needs .

If you want a service free threaded headset Chris King is amongst the best.

If it's installed correctly and kept adjusted properly it will last a very long time. I still have some from the 1980's.
