Campy & Chainrings: Minimum size?

I have 2 questions really. First, how small a chainring can you run on a campy mirage triple crankset? The smallest I've seen is 30. chainrings sized 26-38-48 and attach them to the campy spider?

Barring that, can you get a different crankset and run it with the campy front derailleur? (something like Sugino XD600 (26-36-46).

The smallest from Campa is 30, unless the old Centaur - when it was a mountain bike line - had a smaller one available, but I have never seen any mention of one.

I have used a Salsa 28 on my 9s Centaur triple. You might be able to get away with a 26 from them, but that would be pushing it, perhaps past the real (not published) der limit. The 28 works a treat.

Look at the Branfordbike site - he has a lot of info on this kind of thing.

Cheers...Gary

I ran a 26/38/50 on a Mirage. The 50 was too big to make it work. Specialities-TA make the chainrings.
I later swaped out the chainset for a Shimano LX, and the Campy front mech just about handles that.

The 74BCD granny position will take a 24.The 135 BCD middle/big will take a 39. There are road FD that work with a 26/36/46. I've used a 105 triple FD and think that is what Rivendell uses on their setups.

I don't know why that would be.

With a 50t, you need to have the front mech quite high from the smallest ring. As the chain moves down the mech to the small ring it is also moved across. It is moved too far across and is dumped onto the bottom bracket shell.

There are people that use a 26 granny with a 52 big ring. You probably need to adjust it right.
