Kickstand Dilemma - Looking for Suggestions/Ideas

The Bike - 2012 Salsa Vaya
The problem - no kickstand mounting plate. Disk brake limits rear triangle options. So I purchased and installed a double leg Pletscher, but there were three conflicts that together are too much of a compromise and may actually damage the chainstays. The first conflict is with the rear disk brake cable routing braise on. It is right where the top plate for the kickstand crosses that chainstay (non drive side - on top of the stay). I cut the corner off the plate, but that is when I noticed the other two conflicts. Conflict two is minor, but involves the front derailler cable touching/rubbing on the kickstand plate. Conflict three, and the most problematic is a conflict with the lower part of the kickstand itself where it touches the rear derailer cable (that travels from under the BB and below the driveside chainstay). With the kickstand installed the cable must travel around the kickstand in an odd angle, compromising rear shifting.

I know I could go without one and have on most bikes for 30 years. However, this is my commuter/tourer/grocery getter that I like to use a stand for. I also pull a BOB trailer and an upright bike is quite important when loaded. If the bike leans too much the whole rigs topples over. Very difficult to right after that.

So, any other stands that might work? I may put a small stand on the BOB as I have seen on this forum, but I would still like one for just the Vaya.

I use one of these occasionally.

They do make a Greenfield stand that has a dogleg type top plate to get around stuff on the chain stays.

jeepr:

I was dumbfounded and perplexed and knew someone would provide a good idea. I could pop that on top the BOB or even my rear rack and use it when needed and leave it at home when not.

BTW - born and raised in D - troit too.

Thank you.

(any other ideas are welcomed)

I understand your situation. I, too, don't like the idea of screwing up a nice frame and/or paint job with a kick stand when the frame doesn't have a mounting plate. I also pull a BoB with my Long Haul Trucker. Like you indicated, I found a kick stand that nicely mounts to the BoB---problem solved, it works great. Don't ask me where I found it, but Google it and you should be okay. It is a pretty standard one of those kick stands that mount to the seat stays and chain stays in a sort of triangular clamp device. I also use a short velcro strap to secure the front wheel to the frame and find I can lean my bike against almost anything without the bike falling over.

The problem with the removable stand device (shown above) is that it's heavy and cumbersome. Hope my suggestion is helpful.

there is a propstand, functionally a stiff tent pole that folds ,
add a elastic to set the brakes ,
and It holds up the bike , even a loaded one..
U shaped end to stick under your top-tube ,
or saddle or wherever, depending on length.

If you have a Tara rack on the front, Tubus make a stand for that, otherwise, somthing like this https://www.click-stand.com/

There were a lot of queries about the lack of stand mount when the Vaya came out, but it's still one of the best value tourers out there, but don't see why they couldn't have put a integrated mount on in the factory, as other companies do it.

You are right about the need for a stand bracket. No criticism of Salsa, just pointing out this from their site: "Loaded with braze-ons for fenders, racks, and lowriders, the Vaya is capable of everything from full-on touring to wet-weather training rides to gravel racing."

I can see needing to change gearing for real loaded touring - that is doable, but a kickstand is not with all the conflicts. They could have moved the braison a fraction of an inch, or simply provided a plate.

Anyone who has ridden pulling a BOB trailer knows how much of a great trailer that is. However, when it tips over it is a PITA.

Oh well, I will look into the Click-stand. Looks like it will work. Also, really like the BOB stand!

Anyone look at or use the Topeak https://www.topeak.com/products/Storage/FlashStandSlim ? Also, the guys at Salsa said that the O-stand would work for the disc brake Vaya. Anyone with experience with one of these?
