Looking for a new rear wheel for my commuter.

I am looking to replace the rear wheel on my giant commuter bicycle. It has 700x35c wheels and needs an internally geared hub. I really want a 8 speed, but with my budget likely will be stuck with a 3. I am looking for a complete, ready to install kit. Getting my LBS to build a new wheel is out of my price range ATM (last time it cost me $140 just for the rebuild. I supplied the hub and rim).

If everything is out of my price range I could settle for a single speed wheel as this is my backup commuter.

I really don't want to exceed $250, but I could go much higher so please make suggestions.

What's wrong with the current wheel?

Geez, to me that's pricey considering 36 spokes should cost $36 or less, and then you can learn how to build the wheel yourself!

Thanks! That last link is what I was looking for. My LBS quoted me $450 for a shimano nexus hub alone. The total would have exceeded $700 (or what I paid in total for my newest commuter bike).

Maybe you need to add a few miles to your idea of local;-)

If your hub is OK, send it to me and I'll build the wheel for $1.00/spoke and $35.00 labor using Wheelsmith 14g SS DB spokes. The cost of the rim depends on which you choose.

BTW- I don't know who you saw locally, but I'd definitely shop around more and expand the radius if necessary. If you need a new hub also call or email Yellow Jersey in Madison Wisc. for a competitive quote on a complete wheel.
