SRAM X5 shifters with Shimano Derailleur?

I was under the impression that SRAM shifters would not work with Shimano derailleurs? But my mountain bike uses a pair of SRAM X5 shifters with a Shimano Deore front derailleur and a SRAM X7 rear derailleur. So does this mean I could replace the X7 with a Shimano rear derailleur?
