campy victory self extracting crank question
Victory cranks have self extracting bolts on the crank with 7mm allen rings.My bolt broke and my LBS removed the crank with muscle and a steel bar.The crank has a couple of dents but looks useable.Can I just use a regular bolt now and rescrew the dust cap?I tried a shimano bolt and it screwed in clockwise and easily.Or do I throw away the crank?A new extractor bolt looks like a lost cause.

I dont know the threading of that cap but big chance the old shimano arabesque will fit just fine. Look at ebay, those self extracting bolts are available. As for the shimano, the threading at the BB is the same than campagnolo, that went in easily doesnt mean too much, just add some thread locker (not the super strong one) in the threads if you want to play safe. U will need a extractor now to remove the crankset if you use regular non self extracting bolts.

Can't say for sure without seeing yours, but dented, gouged, or chipped crankarms are bad news. The flaw will be the seed for fatigue failure.

+1+ Cautionary warning, on scratch induced stress riser cracks in forged aluminum parts..
If the extractor ring is still in the crank arm , remove it and throw it away.. yes you should be able to use the Shimano style bolt in the axle to hold the crank arm on . to remove the crank you will use a conventional cranl extractor, i would insure that the threads in the crank arm are still sound. If not, it will be another struggle to remove it next time, then using it is questionable.. remove the extractor ring from the other side m\, then unscrew the bolt, and replace it too. you won't have to remove that arm, just simplify the bolt scheme to match. |

clean up the aluminum to a smooth polish, where the pry-claw left them,
and you May avoid it spreading a crack. If there is a LH thread then you need a special Campag extractor, but I thought that was just a particular Record, and was dropped after a few years. I have several Campag cranks and none of them need a special extractor. there is a Campag 8mm allen hex socket bolt for fitting on crankarms , too. |
The self extractors with 7mm are the same as C-Record and they are incredibly annoying because 7mm allen wrenches are nearly impossible to find in the states. You can use normal crank bolts and normal dust caps. When you want to take the arms off they use a standard crank puller. The dings don't look serious. I wouldn't worry about it, but maybe check them out every now and then and make sure there are any cracks forming. That being said I wouldn't race crits on them, but I doubt that was ever your plan.

I managed to obtain a 7mm allen and used it till the bolt broke.I also located left handed crank pullers which were available for exorbitant prices.now that the crank bolt is broken I'll use a normal bolt and puller.

Everything below Chorus had right-hand threads. I'm not sure which way Chorus went. |

I have used the usual crank extractor from park, the old junk u can find in any store and works fine with campagnolo. Even the saavedra I had 30 years ago worked find with old shimano and campagnolo, same threading. The same park one worked with miche and another japanese track crankset i had.

OK OK I am not sure how I missed this thread but here is my 2 cents.
if you broke an extractor ditch them both. use a normal crank bolt Campi, Shimano, Ofmega just not that 16mm Zues crap! and then get press in plastic dust caps. it will not look as nice but dust caps are just that dust caps. |
