1) What is this thing called?
2) I broke one on the Avid Shorty's I have on my inherited Trek XO1 (not sure of the year but at least a couple of years old; believe these are stock) - any suggestions for repair/replacement?
The brakes still function with this thing broken, but I can no longer adjust the distance from the pad to the rim, plus I hate having broke stuff on my rig so would like to address this asap.

I Believe you may need to replace the whole arm. There should be a set listed on Ebay right now. Not through me but the shop I work at is giving it a try, the last pair went for less than wholesale.

Ugh. I was hoping not to hear that :-)
Anyhow: I see some Avid Shorty 6's listed on there; mine are 4's, would I be ill-advised to replace 4's with 6's? Or is it an "upgrade" as the numbers suggest?
Also: still curious as to the name of this part. No one I've talked to yet has been able to come up with anything better than "that thingy"
Thanks for the prompt reply. BTW I have a brother in Raleigh who is a MTB'er. Not really relevant, but just commenting on your loc.
Thanks,
'nother

I recognize that as the part that generally breaks on Avids when overtightened. If I had broken the right one, you'd be in luck, but we've both broken the same side. And no, I don't know the actual name either, but it is a return spring tension device of some sort.

They are the same but the 6 weighs 16 grams less. WooHoo.

My Trek hybrid's original cantilever brakes broke because of those plastic things getting worn out and brittle. AFAIK, isn't possible to replace them. I got new canti brakes (front+back) with cartridge pads from Nashbar for $20 :-)

BTW, mine appears to be of cast aluminum, not plastic - but anyway it's still broken so it doesn't really matter
Thanks, all . . .
