Change tire/tube
 

I have a nexus 7 speed rear hub with the drum brake. There are cables on both sides of the rear wheel. I need to replace the tube and tire, what is the best way to do this?

Disconnect the cables.

You can change a tire with only disconnecting one side of the axle and other cables.

I have seen street-side bicycle repair guys do this in China. It takes them about 7 minutes to change a tube, make the payment transaction and get the customer back on the street.

Personally, I still take the whole wheel off.

OK, let me rephrase that. If I was only going to remove ONE of the cables, which is the easier to remove and put back correctly for a novice? The brake or the gear side?

The answer depends on the type of cable retention fitting used on each side. Both cable systems are easy to readjust after reassembly -- there should be a key index point for the transmission, and the brake cable should give you a comfortable amount of lever travel, with no danger of bottoming. If you are indecisive, I would vote to disassemble the brake, although one could argue that a slipping brake cable, even the rear, is much more serious than a slipping shift cable.
