How long to make cable housing?

I built my road bike 2 weeks back, and one of the things I wasnt sure was how long to make the cable housing. I know its too long now, but I don't want to cut it too short.
Any tips?

It's kinda like picking a racing line - it's the straightest way to get there.

Likewise, size your housing to ensure the largest radius bends.

+1 , a smooth line, if that means a little longer, then it's fine..

Usually it means shorter. I've seen way more bikes with too-long housing than too-short.

That goes in reverse for RD loops though. You might have noticed pro bikes using huge loops these days, thanks to the absurdly short cable pull of 10spd systems using the same derailleur geometry developed for 6spd. Error introduced by housing issues is magnified. Time to break backwards compatibility of RDs and increase cable pull, but it prolly won't happen to push folks onto electric.

That's because they tend to sell the outers in specific sizes (like 300mm for rear brake and dérailleurs) and bikes that have cable discs with a hydro disk "option" tend to have the entire length housed!
