claw to hanger conversion?

I have a bike with rear derailleur that uses a claw (cheapo tourney RD). I know that means it's a low end frame, but for sentimental reasons I'd like to upgrade it to a higher end rear derailleur (it's an early 90's . The thing is, most better derailleurs don't come as a claw option.

Do I just buy a derailleur hanger or is there a reason it has a claw derailleur?

Will any derailleur hanger work?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

I've done exactly what you want to! You need an adapter claw - see here, about two thirds of the way down.

Click on the link in my signature to the Max - it now runs full XT

Oh, any old claw hanger will work? That's good to know. I'm going with a microshift RD as it's so much cheaper. Will have to wander down to the lbs and see if they have them in stock (among other things on my list for my winter rebuild project).

most better derailleurs don't come as a claw option. Is there a way I can get a derailleur hanger to put on this bike or some other conversion I can make?
there is a separate part, that offers the common threaded hole of a derailleur hanger.
that all other derailleurs would screw in-to.

it is held on the frame by:
A) by the axle, and
B) a small screw and a special washer that fills part of the dropout slot end,
and keeps it in place when you remove the wheel

Your LBS, should be able to get you one.. the adapter itself is low cost .
for slotted, more horizontal, dropouts.
