Shimano/SRAM Compatibility
Looks like I will need some new shifters for my mtb. Mine are Shimano Deore. I am looking at SRAM X.7, but they say they are only compatible with SRAM rear derailleurs. Is that true? I have a Deore XT rear derailleur (old style).

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

How many cogs on the cassette?
Sram does make some shifters that work with Shimano, but the X- series (1:1 shifters) are completely incompatible.

My understanding is that SRAM shifters with "word" model names (like Attack and TRX) are Shimano-compatible. Models with numbers (X.7, X.9) are SRAM-only.

Ok, I hear what you all are saying about compatibility. Now, I have checked on the SRAM X.9 rear derailleur, to go with the X.7 Shifters, and for the derailleur, it says, "to be used with ESP shifters only". The X.7 shifters I have seen are not described as "ESP". Does this mean I can not use the X.7 shifters with the X.9 rear derailleur?
My gear setup is 3X9.

ESP is SRAM's acronym for 1:1 cable pull ratio. Anything X.x like your X.7 shifters is ESP.
I use the Rockets and Attacks with Deore XT rear derailleurs with very good results, FWIW.

Good to hear, Matt. I think I'll just replace the right shifter for now with SRAM Attack like DS suggested.

I don't think you'll regret it. The Attacks are a very underrated shifter IMHO. So are the Rockets, though they are a royal pain to get hold of now.
