Repaint frame?
 

Has anybody ever painted or hired somebody to repaint their frame? Is it even practical? I just dont want a total black frame, i like having something unique like my name airbrushed or something like that. Am i just day dreaming of something not worth it?

Just take it to be powdercoated. Its like $80 max and includes sandblasting... people get it done all the time. I have two frames I've had done with very nice results.

Good fancy paint isn't cheap. The color factory starts at $139 and generally gets good marks. No website, but phone is 1-800- 62gleam.

The problems with re paints are... you have to strip the frame. You might have to chase some of the threads when you get the frame back due to paint in the threads.
Some (many) repaints have paint that is not as strong as the original and scratches very easy.

There are many good repainters out there too. If the paint is done properly it is strong or stronger than the original. Do your homework. Ask to talk to customers before you get the work done. Or go to a recommended painter from a happy cyclist.

There must be some people on this forum that can address the problem of long lasting strong paint from experience.

Seely?............. Long lasting? scratches? From who?

I have painted a couple of my own frames just to learn and enjoy it. The paint I used was easy to scratch, I did not bake it or do anything special. I know about the problem so it's OK for me on two of my nice looking but practically free beater bikes.
I would not recommend this for a favorite nice bike.

Definitely go for a place that does sandblasting first. That makes a huge difference in the life of the paint.

http://www.spicercycles.com will do a strip and powdercoat for a frame for $80. Search the forums for all the recommendations for Spicer.

The place I use is a large local shop... they do primarily industrial and corporate accounts but will do individual stuff as a favor more or less. It lasts forever from what I can tell and is darn near impossible to scratch, especially with the clearcoat.

That's good to hear, have you built up both frames and ridden them for a while?

I would imagine i could ask whoever is doing the job to cover up the bottom bracket chamber area.
