Need Help adjusting the shifting of gears.

I have a 10 year old 20"Diamond Back that was ridden very little before it was taken apart and repainted and I would now like to donate it to a young person that needs a bike for Christmas. Can some one please tell me how to set up or adjust both sets of gears. It has a Shimano SIS derailer, I hope that is what you call it, on the back 6 sprockets and a Shimano on the front two gears. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
